Halp again: Verizon FiOS

I am a bad daughter and forgot to post about this sooner, but better late than never. My mom's neighborhood is all fitted and ready to roll for FiOS, and she's trying to decide whether or not to go for it. It seems awesome -- but it means switching over phone, cable and internet all to one service, so if there are bugs to be aware of, she'd like to be in the know. What is the common wisdom on FiOS, internets? Good? Bad? Good for certain services but not others? Any advice is welcome. Thanks!

My dad's got it, but he doesn't really use it to its full extent so I have no idea if it's worth it or not. One thing I would say: at least in the early days there were scare stories about FiOS being a secret plot to kill off DSL. The phone companies are legally required to allow other ISPs to use their copper lines. As part of the FiOS installation the techs were actually cutting the copper so that you couldn't go back from FiOS. That's bad!

Since then the picture has gotten muddy and it's no longer clear if it's really a conspiracy. But you can at least ask them not to cut your copper, and in that case they won't. So if your mom gets FiOS, she should mention that to the technician when he comes: don't cut my copper!
