Ring any bells?

My friend Matt is wondering if anybody recognizes this and knows what it was called:

there was this story i read in a jr high literature book once that told a story of a world where people ate this like icecream or something that made them fat then when they got too fat they went into this chamber that slimmed them up and everytime got a dot stamped on their wrist

My best guess: star bellied sneetches/wooden people of the popul vuh mashup? It reminds me of the movie we watched at some point in English class, about the planet that only got sunlight once a year (or future earth, whatever), and the kids in school had to sit under sunlamps and have recess in the dark. And then when it came it was like this huge thing everyone anticipated. And some freaked out, and some were underwhelmed. Kinda like New Years Eve. Anybody know what that one was?

UPDATE: Thanks, internet! Looks like the ice cream story is "Lose Now, Pay Later" by Carol Farley, which was published in 2041: Twelve Stories About the Future By Top Science-Fiction Writers ed. Jane Yolen. The sunlight one is Ray Bradbury's "All Summer in a Day."

Yes! Not the ice cream book, but the sunlight one. It's a Ray Bradbury short story. But I don't remember which one.

I read the ice cream one. can't remember the name, but it definitely existed. I think the big reveal was that it was some plot by aliens to take over the world. In retrospect it was probably quite anti-materialist.

You missed the point of the sunlight movie. I believe there was a girl being picked on. Bullies locked her in a room or a closet before the sunlight came out for that one day/hour, etc. So she anticipated it for an entire year, only to have it taken away from her.

yea all summer in a day- most of the kids grew up on the planet with sun only once every 7 years, so they had never seen it before. The girl grew up on earth, and hadnt seen the sun in one or two years, but could remember it. The others were jealous of her, and locked her in a closet prior to the sun coming out for the day. All of them have a great time in the sun, and forget about her. When they come back in they remember they left her in the closet and feel really guilty, let her out, but wont look at her. and then the story ends.

i loved that one.
